Why do we need creativity?
I recently shared the stage with Edward de Bono, and sat through one of his “death by overhead projector” sessions (if you’ve seen him live, you’ll know what I mean). One of the exercises he showed related to why we need creativity. His opening question was to ask why do we need creativity? And he forced us to really trying grapple with the question. Of course, each of the groups came up with some fairly valid reasons, but after all of our input he explained it very clearly and very simply.
We need creativity in life and business because information does not flow into our lives in a regulated or regimented sequence. Information arrives randomly and haphazardly, and as each new piece of data arrives, we need to readjust our picture of the whole. He then proceeded to do a very simple exercise to prove this point. I have put this exercise online here (you will need MS Internet Explorer to see it properly). Or download the PPT file by right clicking here.
