A decade later

Windows 95I’m not sure it really means anything, but today (9 August) is the 10th anniversary of the launch of Windows 95. Within 2 months, Microsoft had sold nearly seven million copies of their ground breaking operating system. That was just ten years ago. THEN, the world thought MS was genius – bringing us WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) word processing and GUI (graphic user interface) interactions with our computers. A massive improvement on Windows 3.11, Win 95 become the standard very quickly.

NOW, Microsoft nearly missed the Internet browser revolution, has struggled to get into other stuff (like HD TV, cellphones, etc), and doesn’t seem to know how to respond to Linux, the free operating system alternative. Maybe the dragon in the living room is getting past its prime.

An innovative company seems to have matured (in the sense that they have a mature business model) and this might be cramping their innovative style.

Whatever. Its been a great 10 years!
