More old people in the UK – so it begins
Most of the developed world is growing older on average. Lower birth rates, longer life expectancies and better medicines are contributing to a general ageing of populations in Japan, Western Europe and North America. This has been predicted for a number of years, and has huge implications – especially on systems that rely on young workers to fund older retirees, in pension and health care costs. The consequences of not reacting soon enough are dire.
Retired people will soon outnumber children and teenagers (usually these stats compare over 65s to under 16s). A recent report from Manchester Online highlights the area of Wilmslow where this has happened – read it here. There are other places its already happened, of course, but the country is only expected to reach this milestone on average in 2013.
