Questions are asked like: are you more/less afraid at night; are you afraid to travel alone; do you travel at night and so on. The overwhelming response to these questions is that citizens are more fearful than previously. The conclusion is clear: citizens perceptions of crime are that it has deteriorated matters got worse.

My impression is that this cannot have been the whole poll -- something was left out. I think in most places people are more afraid to travel at night. If a lady has a flat between one town and another, how is she going to get help? The answers given may have little to do with crime. I would have to see how the polster makes the connection between crime and night travel.

Israel, I think that too often we look for single solution answers to our problems. The world is a complex inter related system of systems.

Poverty and crime are undoubtably integrally inter-related in South Africa. And, you need to also take into account our history, and JP's points about young adult men.

Yes, we need to take multiple trends into account.

i think that this is probably the first article that has come close to articulating the crime problem correctly. i do believe that the government has a role to play when it comes to social engineering similar to what the government did in the US after the depression and Germany after WWII.
What has been disappointing is the silence on poverty, i think there is definately a strong link between the two. you cannot think you can solve crime while our society is being ravaged by poverty. JP spoke of a 'man with no hope and a gun' i think the combination of these two factors is what we are experiencing. No hope due to poverty can lead a man to do fearful things. i'm not suggesting tha all crime is birthed from poverty and that is why i'm putting forward the notion of social engineering by government. Let us not forget that SA has a strong history of violence whether it was the police or the stone throwing generations of freedom fighters, and as the saying goes ' violence breeds violence'.
We all need to arise and right the wrongs!
