Generational research in Africa

Rapid social changes in Africa are thought to have resulted in high intergenerational disjuncture on the continent. In spite of the importance of intergenerational relations in African societies, very little attempt has been done to understand this phenomenon. A recent surge in interest on generational relations has occurred in Europe and North America. Thus, this project aims to fill in the gap in information that exists on this important aspect of African societies.This study looks at two main aspects of intergenerational relations, viz., the direction of intergenerational flow of economic resources and patterns of co-residence. The study aims to show how older persons are disadvantaged on these fronts. The study makes use of secondary data from three sources: The 2003 Status of the Youth data. In addition, qualitative data sourced from focus groups discussions to be held in Gauteng was used.
