Generational research in Africa

June 24, 2009 Graeme Codrington Generations, Global View No Comments

If you’re interested in the generations, and how intergenerational issues might look in Africa, then here’s a conference you might be interested in. I am not involved, and don’t know the researchers personally, but this looks good.

HSRC Seminar Series in collaboration with the Capacity Development Division
The following seminar will be presented in Pretoria, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal (See Details below).

Is it time to renegotiate an intergenerational ‘contract’? The state of intergenerational relations in South Africa.
Presented by Dr Monde Makiwane Senior Research Specialist, CYFSD, and Ms Christine Jesseman Head: Research Depaertment, South African Human Rights Council.

Venues in Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town: see below
Date: Tuesday 28 July 2009
Time: 14H15 for 14h30 – 15H30

Rapid social changes in Africa are thought to have resulted in high intergenerational disjuncture on the continent. In spite of the importance of intergenerational relations in African societies, very little attempt has been done to understand this phenomenon. A recent surge in interest on generational relations has occurred in Europe and North America. Thus, this project aims to fill in the gap in information that exists on this important aspect of African societies.

This study looks at two main aspects of intergenerational relations, viz., the direction of intergenerational flow of economic resources and patterns of co-residence. The study aims to show how older persons are disadvantaged on these fronts. The study makes use of secondary data from three sources: The 2003 Status of the Youth data. In addition, qualitative data sourced from focus groups discussions to be held in Gauteng was used.

M-Pesa, Vodacom, Nedbank and Rob Shuter

November 30, 2009 Barrie Bramley

Earlier this year Rob Shuter (head of Nedbank Retail) resigned from Nedbank and joined Vodacom as Financial Director. It was an exciting move from my perspective as I watch mobile phone companies (and technology in general) redefine how we do business. Not necessarily the companies, but users who adapt the technology to find innovative ways [...]

To degree or not to degree, that is the question!

November 16, 2009 Dean van Leeuwen

We’ve been noticing a distinct shift in the perceived value that a university degree brings. It’s largely accepted that a degree from an university, especially an ivy league one such as MIT, Harvard or INSEAD can improve expected earnings significantly. This has resulted in a seemingly all out onslaught by young people to get degrees, [...]
