Personally I would agree with your social media strategy. Although I come at it from a slightly different angle. I would suggest that your twitter profile is succeeding in building a following purely because it is focused. Specifically on your topic of choice. 

I noticed an increase in followers as soon as I focused my twitter profile on Social Media in South Africa. Previously it was almost a duplicate of FB. I have found that a trend on twitter shows people following for two primary reasons:

1) To build their own following
2) They are genuinely interested in you content

The first is self serving but the second reason is the reason you post content. To extend your circle of influence. Focused content on twitter makes your profile more interesting and more useful to those who follow you.
